COMPUTERIZATION OF STUDENT RECORDS, MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF BENIN AS A CASE STUDY USING My SQL

BY
DEPARTMENT OF MATHEMATICS

ABSTRACT
The primary purpose of this project work is to highlight the possibility of computer application in storing students’ records.
Before the advent of computer, students’ recording was done manually. Lecturers were subjected to the stressful work of computing and compiling these records. But with the introduction of the computer systems, these works are now done with greater ease.
Computerized student records therefore involve the matriculation number, surname of the students, first and last name of the student, course(s) offered, level (semester by semester), raw score of student, grade of student and the final gross percentage average.

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
In recent times, computers have played very important roles in our everyday activities. The uses of these computers therefore cannot be over emphasized.
Due to its advent, work has become so easy for so many financial organizations, institutions, churches and a host of other government and non-government parastatals. Work as used here refers to the compilation as well as computation of day-to-day records.
Before now, business and non-business records were not only exposed to a greater risk of being maliciously damaged or stolen by an unwanted individual, but these records were also very prone to human errors because of the manual way of compiling those records. But with the computer innovation, records are more reliably kept without fear of losing it except in cases where the records are kept in some erasable memories, and these records are misplaced when there is a power outage. Non-the-less, there is a greater level of ease when working with the computer system.
AIM AND OBJECTIVE OF THIS PROJECT WORK
The prime purpose of computerizing records is the better assurance an individual or a corporate organization gets from using the electronic device/machine (computer) as against the conventional way of keeping the same records. Assurance as used here refers to the reliability and cost effectiveness of the computer system.
This project work therefore is to see that manual records which were extracted from the department of mathematics are kept electronically for future references. It is also the aim of this project work to harness the possible ways in which computer devices can be used to achieve efficient record keeping.
BASIC DEFINITION OF SOME TERMS
COMPUTER: A computer is an electronic machine which is used for storing vital information.
COMPUTERIZATION: This is a process of controlling, performing, processing or storing (a system, operation, or information) by means of an electronic computer or computers.
RECORD: A record is a written account of something that is kept so that it could be looked at and used in the future.
DATA: According to the Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary (7th Edition) Data refers to facts or information, especially when examined and used to find out things or to make decisions.
BRIEF NOTE ON MY SQL
My SQL is a freely available open source Relational Database Management System (ROBMS) that uses structured Query Language (SQL).
SQL is the world’s most popular language for adding, accessing and managing content in a database. It is most noted for its quick processing, proven reliability, ease and flexibility of use. My SQL is an essential part of almost every open source PHP application.
One of the most important things about using My SQL is to have a My SQL specialized host.
This chapter of the project work therefore gives us an indepth knowledge of what we are to see in the remaining chapters of the work.
SCOPE OF THE STUDY
The computerization of student records especially in the Department of Mathematics is quite an enormous task. The issue of getting the white paper scores, calculating the Gross percentage Average of each student manually and doing the analysis with the new system that has been implemented to see if it is on the same line with manual calculations make the work somehow bulky. However, attempts will be made to see that unlimited records can go through the same analysis. Two major issues that would be addressed during the course of this project work is the electronic computations of our manual records and the automatic award of degrees. Information on the description of the system design and its implementation will also be provided.
OUTLINE OF THE STUDY
Chapter one introduces the project work and tells us how the research work was successfully carried out.
Chapter two is the literature review of this project work. It cites names/authors whose materials and books helped in completing this work.
Chapter three is the methodology. It talks about the methods and approaches followed in completing the project work.
Chapter four is the Data Analysis. This chapter gives us the analysis/program of the project work.
Chapter five is the discussion of our results and conclusion of the project work.
